"How long will it take?" is the first question every beginner asks. The honest answer depends on your goals. Here's a realistic timeline based on 14+ years of teaching experience — from playing your first song to achieving Trinity Grade 8.
Month 1–2: The Foundation Phase
In the first 8 weeks with consistent daily practice (20–30 min/day), most beginners can: identify all keys on the piano, play simple melodies with one hand, read basic sheet music, and play their first complete beginner song. This is the Pre-Primer / Beginner stage.
Month 3–6: Building Coordination
By month 6, students can typically play simple songs with both hands together, understand time signatures and rhythm, play C, G, F and Am chords comfortably, and perform short pieces for family. This corresponds to Trinity Primer / Senior Beginner level.
Year 1–2: Trinity Grades 1–3
With dedicated practice, most students reach Trinity Grade 1 within 12–18 months. Each subsequent grade takes 4–8 months. At this stage students can play full pieces, understand dynamics, and perform confidently in exams.
Year 3–5: Intermediate — Trinity Grades 4–6
Grades 4, 5 and 6 develop advanced technique, sight-reading, and musicality. Students at this level can learn popular songs quickly, improvise simple accompaniments, and begin teaching others the basics.
Year 5–8: Advanced — Trinity Grades 7 & 8
Trinity Grade 8 is the pinnacle of graded piano education. Students at this level have professional-level technique, can perform complex classical and contemporary works, and are equipped to pursue music at a diploma or degree level. Our own students have achieved Distinction at Grade 8 within 5–6 years of starting from zero.
